Quarrying in the Koala Coast

Last updated: 17 October 2003

Background

The Karreman Quarry was the scene of 'accidental quarrying' of six hectares of prime koala habitat. This is now under investigation by various regulatory authorities. The result will probably be a fine that will not bring back the habitat, nor seriously dent company profits.

Of major concern is the likelihood of a State Government push to expand the extractive resource industry in the Redland Shire, and a request by the company to further destroy prime bushland perhaps 60 hectares for more quarry activity.

Environmental values at stake

The Karreman Quarry is in the heart of the Koala Coast. An expansion of the quarrying activity will fragment the remaining habitat, affecting many species besides the koalas. It will also set a precedent for undermining the conservation values of so-called 'protected' areas.

Outcome

The quarry operation within Redland Shire was recently fined $45,000; this probably represents less than 1% of the profit made from illegal operations.

On the 10th of October, Karreman Quarries Pty Ltd was fined $25,000 for having extended its quarrying activities without the proper environmental authority over the land in question, a further $20,000 for having allowed sediment to potentially cause environmental harm.

Karreman Quarries Pty Ltd apparently pleaded guilty in the Cleveland Magistrates Court to both offences. The quarry was also ordered to pay $12,500 in costs, including investigation costs. The conviction was not recorded.
