The South East Queensland Regional Plan prepared by the State Government set a population 'target' of 3.96 million people for the region by 2026, up by almost 1.2 million from the current 2.78 million.
Local Governments are required to prepare "Local Growth Management Strategies" (LGMS) and submit these to the State Government to demonstrate how Local Governments will meet 'targets' outlined in the Regional Plan.
While the Regional Plan is the broad picture, the LGMS are the fine detail.
Some Local Governments seem determined to meet, and even exceed, the 'targets'. Yet these 'targets' are projections based on past patterns of urban development made possible by planning documents approved by Government.
These 'targets' are not our preordained future - we can exercise control over the future growth rate of South East Queensland (SEQ) – but we must act NOW!
